Digital Driver's License-
state of Arizona

a smartphone based digital driver’s license concept for the state of Arizona that effectively translates the visual design from a physical driver’s license while capturing the essence of the state.

final design.

For my final design, I pivoted away from the design I was working on as it was hard to read and the colors contrasted too sharply. Instead, I moved forward with the glassmorphism style while attempting to maintain the elements of Arizona. I focused on readability and highlighting and grouping key information.

wallet view

The wallet view is the home screen for the app. It allows users to select between the full driver's license and the age verification license.

full license view

The full view screen allows users to access their full driver's license information digitally. Information is organized into sections, and key elements are highlighted.

age verification view

The age view screen allows users to digitally access only the driver's license information that is needed to verify age. Age is displayed at the top next to the driver's license photo.

share feature view

The scan screen allows the user to share their digital driver's license via QR code. This allows users to retain possession of their phone, improving security.

information view

The info screen explains how a digital driver's license works for first time users as well as explaining the scan feature. The info screen is available by pressing the info icon on any screen.

project goals.

Increase Readability

Highlight key information, use all available space on screen,

Intuitive Navigation

Intuitive navigation with limited interaction needed to access key information

Purpose-Built Design

Purpose built for smartphones infused with the ambience of Arizona

Share Feature

Ability to share digital driver’s license info through a QR code

research phase

the research phase was spent doing competitive analysis on similar existing products as well as developing a moodboard and sketches to establish a visual direction from which i could start designing.

competitive analysis

Apple’s rendition of a digital driver’s license features a modern minimal design, but lacks visibility of key information.  The only information available at first glance is first name and last initial. It requires the user to navigate through three screens before accessing their license information.

moodboard

An eye-catching and colorful design based on the pink sunsets of Arizona. Incorporates desert elements like saguaro cactus and red rock. Emphasis on color, shape, and negative space.

sketches

initial sketches and brainstorming revolved around trying to isolate what problems exist with current digital driver's licenses apps and how could those problems be fixed with design. I spent time breaking down how many screens i wanted, what information was needed on each screen, and sketching rough drawings of how the information could be presented.

design iterations

in design, iteration is everything and a lot of iterations went into what eventually became the final design. Learn about my thought and design process by looking through them.

iteration 1

For my first design iteration, I created two designs based on the wireframes and the two styles I made during the design research phase. My main focus was deciding between the formal monochromatic design and the bright and colorful design.

iteration 2

For my second design iteration, I chose the bright and colorful style from my design research as the mood for my design. I focused on creating an eye-catching design and adding elements of Arizona.

iteration 3

For my third design iteration, I focused on increasing readability and making navigation more intuitive. I also attempted to add a glassmorphism style to the design.

project takeaways

I learned the importance of creating a brand identity and how establishing a consistent mood can help create a cohesive design. Problem solving how to fit the information on a driver's license while still being a legible and attractive design gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of typography and was a great lesson in working within constraints.
